A former producer of The Bill tried to hire three hitmen to kill his wealthy scriptwriter partner so he could inherit her estate and run off with his younger lover who he met in a brothel, a court heard. The couple had been together for more than 30 years and both worked writing for TV, including The Bill.

But the first hitman tried unsuccessfully to warn the cancer survivor about her partner's alleged intentions, and the second alerted police, who brought in an undercover detective to pose as 'Chris', a third killer for hire. The Old Bailey heard he provided details of her movements to and from her local church and the Goodwood Health Club in Chichester. He also handed out a photograph along with the private number plate registration of her white Saab car. Jurors were told he suggested the hired killers could make the murder look like a mugging or a fall from the cliffs near their home in the picturesque village of Amberley in West Sussex over a nine-month period starting in February last year.

The first would-be hitman tried to warn Ms Allinson of her partner's plan, while the second contacted police, who snared Harris using an undercover officer posing as a third assassin. Harris was arrested on November 12 last year after police found him in bed with his younger girlfriend in a Bed and Breakfast in south London. He claimed he had contacted underworld figures as research for a thriller novel he planned on writing, although the prosecutor William Boyce QC said Harris had not written a word.

He wanted both the younger woman and the older woman's money. The court heard Harris and Ms Allinson, who were both retired, had previously worked in the television industry on programmes including the Bill. She was a retired script editor, who had suffered from cancer, while he worked in production on the now-decommissioned show.

Harris was arrested at Police arrived as he was in bed with Ugne Cekaviciute, and Harris told them: It has nothing to do with her.

I'm writing a book. In a police interview the following day, Harris said he was researching a book he planned to write to earn some money.

The court heard he said the novel was about 'Tom Noble', a middle aged lawyer who was in love with a younger girl, but unhappily married to a rich older woman, who cheated on him. Ms Allinson, who had a generous pension and owned the house they shared, was a member of the parish council and a singer in the church choir. Jurors heard Harris, who relied on an 'allowance' from his partner, presented himself as a quiet figure to friends and neighbours, but was living a double life.

He told police he met Ms Cekaviciute in a brothel, but thought she was 'too good to be there'. He would spend money on her, increasing amounts of money it would seem, of gifts, flowers, movies, dinners, books for her studies, underwear and of course hotels.

On his own account it seemed he fell in love with her. But the prosecutor continued: He did want Ms Cekaviciute, but she had no money and neither did he and therfore his solution was he would have Hazel Allinson murdered. He would have her money and he could spend it on himself and a younger woman.

Jurors were told Harris contacted the first 'hitman' Christopher May, who works as a mechanic in Kingston, in February last year, claiming he wanted help to retrieve a debt. But when they met in person, Harris allegedly said: He then handed over a photograph of Ms Allinson, who he referred to as his wife, a picture of a white Saab and details of the car's private number plate, jurors heard.

The court was told Mr May played along with Harris as he planned to warn his partner about the danger she was in. Mr May made secret recordings of their meetings as Harris said: The sooner the better. In another chat he allegedly said: Jurors were told in late February Harris told Mr May he should kill Ms Allinson when she walked to church on her own on Sunday. He also sent Mr May his home address, telling the 'hitman' when they planned to visit a friend's house for supper and when his partner would go out to walk the dogs.

The prosecutor said Harris was providing 'minute-by-minute' details of the target's movements, but added: He was trying to save her. He told jurors Harris was so shocked to see her return home, he sent a text to Mr May which read: Mr May contacted Ms Allinson using a false name between 10 and 16 March, but she replied with Harris's phone number.

Prosecutors say that after Mr May failed to deliver, Harris contacted a second man, Duke Dean, to 'do a hit'. The court heard that in another meeting in November he said: Sussex has a long coastline, including cliffs.

The couple lived together in the upmarket village of Amberley, in West Sussex.

The prosecutor said Harris showed Mr Dean the Church attended by Ms Allinson, the place where she parked her car, the club she went to and the building where she sang in the choir. He then took Mr Dean to the Foundry pub in Chichester where he handed him a photograph of Ms Allinson, a picture of her car and a diary of her movements, jurors heard.

But instead of carrying out the murder, Mr Dean walked into Bishopsgate police station in the City of London on 8 November last year telling officers a man had offered him a large amount of money to kill his partner. A meeting was arranged where Harris was introduced to undercover policeman 'Chris' and the court heard Harris patted down the police officer when he got into his car to make sure he wasn't 'wearing a wire'.

He also said he wanted the murder to seem like an accident, a mugging gone wrong or a a carjacking gone wrong, jurors heard. The court heard Harris said that when asked if he was sure, he replied: I'm percent sure. Harris, of Amberley, West Sussex, denies three counts of soliciting to murder.
