Some of the primary-winning guerrillas, including Rubio and fellow Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Rand Paul of Kentucky, have gone on to become members of the Washington establishment themselves.

Others flamed out spectacularly in general elections, costing Republicans Senate seats in Delaware, Missouri, Indiana and Nevada. And not all primary challengers were successful.
